The temps are firmly in the 90's, the Astros have the best record in baseball, and we have some seriously fantastic tours coming up, so I'm a happy camper already. I am also extra happy for my amazing mom, who just retired after 35 years of teaching and 23 years at my alma mater, Stratford High School in Houston!
April 2 - VFW Post 7110 Fundraiser - New Braunfels - This was a really fun lineup of artists playing tunes to raise money for the VFW in New Braunfels to support all their veteran and Gold Star family outreach programs.
I don't know about y'all, but I'm ready for 2017! 2016 was a big year for me professionally and personally, with my record Just Move On getting some great reviews and lots of radio airplay here in the US and across Europe. I also landed on the Grammy ballot in 3 categories, which was very cool, and I got the chance to tour the UK and Ireland, which was even cooler! Personally, I'm happy to announce that I've made the move to Austin, Texas! Houston will always be my home, and I'm still there as often as I can be, but I'm really excited for this next chapter in the Live Music Capitol of the World.

In 2017, I'll be releasing some new videos and a couple of singles to Texas radio, and I plan to be on the road and writing songs as much as possible. We're kicking off the year strong in January with full band shows at The Redneck Country Club (tomorrow!), Texas Radio Live on Sun Radio, The Rattle Inn in Austin, and Poodies in Spicewood, and duo shows with Chuck Hawthorne throughout Texas and California. Friends in Oklahoma, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Nashville, we'll see y'all in February! All the details are available at www.libbykoch.com/gigs!

As always, I'm so thankful for your support. I couldn't do what I do without y'all listening to the music and coming out to shows. I'm truly grateful for all of this. Much love to each and every one of you, and I wish you all a very happy and fulfilling 2017!

Thanks,
Libby
Libby Kochtag:libbykoch.com,2005:Post/42287642016-06-14T00:52:56-05:002017-01-12T20:51:34-06:00EARLY PRESS REVIEWS OF THE NEW ALBUMMy new record JUST MOVE ON is being released on Berkalin Records June 24, 2016, and it's already being received well in the press!

Texas Monthly debuted my song "Back to Houston" in its Music Monday Feature, which makes this native Texan a happy cowgirl! We saw lots of family and good friends on this last leg, which is what it's all about.

The first in-state stop was Chuck's hometown of Amarillo. We stayed with two of his best buddies, Brandon King and Angie DeWitt, and we had dinner at his sister Jonnie's house for the best dang cabbage tacos and scotchies this side of Abilene (trust). Then we played to a packed hometown crowd at Leftwoods on Route 66, which was a blast!

Next we headed south to Lubbock, where we played a show with cowboy songster Andy Hedges and singer/songwriter/folklorist Andy Wilkinson at Caprock Winery, which is a beautiful space with delicious wine. We stayed with my good friend Kathy Kelley and got a surprise visit from Brandon "Brand Iron" King, who drove down from Amarillo to catch the show! We closed the night with a song circle at the Hedges' house. It was an honor to play songs with these guys. Andy Hedges has a new album, Cowboy Songster, Vol. 2, coming out in January, which y'all should definitely check out!

We had a night off between shows, so we headed east to Fort Worth to hang out at the Fort Worth Stockyards (Chuck had never been), and we got to hang with Chuck's brother Tommy too!

The next night, we played the amazing Texan Theater in downtown Greenville, east of Dallas. This is a meticulously and beautifully restored 1890's opera house, which has seen performers such as Houdini, the Marx Brothers, and Souza take the stage. Today, the Texan Theater is home to nightly performances of curated up and coming as well as legendary artists. A full, 4 course dinner, drinks, and all gratuities are included with every ticket, and the staff goes above and beyond to make this a first class experience for the audience and the artists too. If you're anywhere near the Texan, you need to check out a show at this truly special place, post haste. This was the leg of the trip I was most looking forward to! Spending most of July in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico is pretty dang sweet. Cool weather, cool people.

As we crossed the border from North Dakota to Montana, we blasted the John Denver (Chuck's fave) & Emmylou Harris (my fave) version of Wild Montana Sky. We were really fired up even though there weren't any of the big mountains in sight for a few hundred miles! We stayed the night at Montana songwriter GT Hurley's gorgeous place in Big Timber, pickin' songs and drinking whiskey on his back porch overlooking a ridiculously picturesque mountain range.

Next it was on to Ovando, a small town (population 50) kinda near Missoula, where Chuck spent some time after one of his combat tours with the Marines in Iraq. Hell, I gotta tell you the Ovando origin story. When Chuck got back to the States after Iraq, he decided he wanted to "smoke the finest cigars, drink the finest scotch, and learn how to fly fish in Montana with my good buddy, Shawn T. Pabst." Turns out fly fishing wasn't Chuck's forte (he almost took his eye out with a fish hook), so Shawn decided they should go somewhere Chuck would be more in his element - the local saloon! They went to Trixi's Antler Saloon, a watering hole in Ovando that got its start in the late 1800's as "The Blood Bucket." Chuck and Shawn (an excellent songster in his own right) busted out their guitars and started playing for the crowd. One of the bar patrons, Jeff, taught his 6 year old daughter (it's a family establishment, y'all) to dance by lifting her up so she could stand on his cowboy boots. Chuck and Shawn decided they'd go to songwriter hell if they didn't write a song about the experience, and the song "Ovando" was born, which is on Chuck's excellent album, Silver Line.

So we decided it would be appropriate to head back to Ovando on this tour and debut the song on the 4th of July at Trixi's! The whole town turned out to the 4th festivities during the day, then most folks spent some time in the Little Black Foot River (I sure did) before heading to Trixi's for the show. By the time Chuck got to the final chorus, the entire crowd was singing along! I bet we sang that song 5 times that night, and it wasn't enough! Trixi's had Chuck sign a poster, which they hung above their jukebox, which has a copy of Silver Line in it, of course. Perhaps the coolest surprise was that our buddies Allen and Debbie from Austin showed up at Trixi's! They were vacationing at Yellowstone and decided to make the trek north to see us! Sometimes one of the best parts about traveling is seeing someone from home.

We spent the night of the 4th at a cool B&B in Ovando then headed west to Missoula to spend several days with the aforementioned Shawn T. Pabst, his incredible wife Kirsten, and fantastic son Finn, a whip smart kiddo who loves sharks, making flies to fish with, and who was the best playmate Bridget had on the whole trip. They ran around the Pabst place up on the Missoula mountainside for hours on end. The Pabst's hosted a barn concert for us on the last night of our stay, and there were over 75 people there enjoying the tunes in this beautiful setting! Bridget made it on stage too.

It was time in the trip to head south and make our way to Jackson Hole, where one of my best friends, Andy Robinson, offered up his place for us to take a mid-tour vacation for about a week. We mapped our route down to Wyoming and decided we'd like to drive through Yellowstone National Park. Initially we'd hoped to camp, but it turns out you have to plan that way in advance, oops! Instead, we totally lucked out on a hotel search and ended up in this really cool small town outside Bozeman called Livingston, where we stayed at a really cool vintage spot called the Murray Hotel. We'll definitely be back there, hopefully to play!

The next day we headed south through Yellowstone, which was awesome. It was my first time there, and it was really cool to take our time and drive south through some of the most truly majestic natural scenery that exists on this planet. The park was pretty crowded, and it started raining and turned cold about halfway through the park, so we didn't wait in line for Old Faithful, but we figured that's a good reason to come back!

We spent the next week or so in one of my favorite places ever, Jackson Hole. It was a great place to hole up for a few days and relax, which was much needed after several thousand miles on the road! Of course we spent a little time at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and the Silver Dollar too! We had tentatively scheduled a house concert there, which fell through, but it was cool to just chill out for a few days and vacation almost like normal people, ha.

The next leg of the trip was up in the air as well, because of another show that fell through in the Denver area. We'd been listening to lots of John Denver on our trip though, and decided that maybe since we had some wiggle room with our travels, we should head down to Aspen, where John spent much of his life. I contacted some friends from Houston who have a house there, and we were able to set up a house concert at their place too, so the route was set! We spent time at the John Denver Memorial Garden (because we had decided at that point that Johnny D was the patron saint of our tour) and at Hunter S. Thompson's favorite bar, the Woody Creek Tavern. The house show at the Houssiere house was most excellent, and we enjoyed getting to see some Houston friends and play songs with and for some very cool kiddos as well.

We then decided to skip the Denver side of the state and head south to Durango to ride the Durango-Silverton train, which was the inspiration for the title track to Chuck's record, Silver Line! My friend of a friend, Andy Ratcliffe, who is from Houston but lives in Durango, hooked us up with a very cool show at local pizza joint and bar, Home Slice. It was a great time! The next day we awoke early to ride the historic steam engine narrow gauge train. We bussed out to Silverton and road the train back to Durango for a half day trip. It was amazing! I highly recommend it if you're in the area. Chuck got to know Murph at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada in January, and since then Murph has invited Chuck to play shows with him at the Saxon Pub in Austin, the Franklin Theater outside of Nashville, and Main Street Crossing in Tomball, among others. Each summer, Murph plays shows on Thursday and Saturday nights at the Rocking 3M Amphitheater at the Bitter Creek Guest Ranch. The outdoor setting is the perfect place to catch some live music in the summertime, and a full chuckwagon dinner is served before the show. Murph played all the hits that night, from Wildfire to What's Forever For to Cowboy Logic and everything in between. He brought Chuck to the stage mid-show, and Chuck played a few songs with the band. To say it was a cool experience is quite the understatement. As if that wasn't enough, Walt and Tina Wilkins were playing in town that night too, so they came to the Chuck & Murph show then we headed to the Lost Love Saloon to check out Walt and Tina's show! New Mexico legend Bill Hearne and Ryan Murphey graced the stage that night too. It was fantastic.

The next day we made our way back to Texas via Santa Fe. It started, however, with a major life change for me...I moved out of my house! However, for a long while I've needed the financial and geographic flexibility to be on the road more, so I finally took the leap and put all my stuff in storage! We had a great time playing at Fair Grinds Coffeehouse, hanging out with my friend Lizzy D, and exploring the lyrical origin of Guy Clark's favorite song about a house on Toulouse, Ramblin' Jack Elliott's 912 Greens. Chuck was surprised by one of his Marine buddies, Staff Sergeant Kevin Spivey, who he hadn't seen in many years, and I had my Aunt Pat, Uncle Deacon, and my cousins Lindsay (with her boyfriend Tristan) and Teague (with his wife Crystal) at the show. I'll be in Atlanta again in late October/early November - can't wait to be back!

Did I mention Chuck was in the Marines? He retired as a Major a few years back after serving our country for 21 years. He is still a crack shot, and we tested his skills on our day off at my buddy Taylor Hayden's fantastic new shooting range in Charlotte called Blackstone Shooting Sports. We got to check out cool old master tapes from some classic albums, hold a Grammy (what?!), and enjoy a good visit with Bil and his wife Patricia.

I was staying at the Y.O. Hotel in Kerrville for Memorial Day weekend to attend the Kerrville Folk Festival on Saturday and play at my friends Mason & Rochelle Hunt's wedding brunch on Sunday in Bandera. Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell were scheduled to headline the Festival that night, and I was beyond excited to see them live.

I went out to the Festival early in the afternoon to catch the first half of the New Folk performances, which was cut short by heavy rains. I decided to hang out for a bit to visit with friends and see if the weather cleared in time for Emmylou and Rodney to play later. Alas, word spread throughout the ranch that the main stage shows were canceled for the evening, so I decided to head back to the Y.O., quite bummed.

Walking into the hotel lobby, I ran into my friend Amy McCarley, one of the New Folk finalists, who introduced me to Michael and Steve, Emmy and Rodney's bassist and sound tech, respectively. I told them I was meeting my dad in the hotel bar (he was there for the wedding). In the bar, I noticed that folks were starting to pull chairs around the fireplace in the hotel lobby, and there were rumors that Emmylou and/or Rodney might play a few songs.

I ran into Steve (the sound guy) at the bar and asked if an impromptu show was really going down. He said Emmylou really wanted to play a few but they were having a hard time finding any amplification. I had my PA system in the car for the next day's gig, so of course I offered to let them borrow it! After that, things moved really quickly, and before I knew it, the full band was set up in the hotel lobby and plugged in to my PA, with Emmylou and Rodney using my microphones to boot!

I had a front row seat to the whole show, sitting on the floor next to musician friends Susan Cattaneo, Ellis, Amy McCarley, Sue Young, Rusty Nelson, Mary Bragg, and others. It was the show of a lifetime. They played for over 2 hours, including the whole new album in track order, The Houston Kid, Red Dirt Girl, a couple of Townes songs, and a host of Gram Parsons songs. Awesome? Yeah, that's an understatement. I got a couple of videos (Return of the Grievous Angel and Luxury Liner), which I'll put on YouTube soon.

After the show, Emmylou and Rodney both expressed thanks for the PA and were gracious to take pictures with me and chat for a bit. We spent the rest of the night in the afterglow of a truly special performance, having drinks with the band and enjoying an all star Kerrville song circle in the lobby with Ellis Paul, David Wilcox, Steve Seskin, Rj Cowdery, New Folk Finalists past and present, and many more.

So yeah. Here are a few pictures of my musical heroes...playing a once in a lifetime intimate show while I'm three feet away...and their voices and instruments were coming through my microphones and cables into the speakers of my PA...I'll never forget it.
